Changing Pattern of antimicrobial Resistance of Microorganisms isolated from clinical Specimens and of Antimicrobial Use during recent 5 Years (1987-1991)

Abstract
We evaluated the Patterns of predominantly isolated microorganisms and their antimicrobial resistance from clinical specimens and analyse the trend of antimicrobial use from 1987 to 1991 at Korea University Guro Hospital.
The results were as follows:
1. During recent 5 years, total 17,732 strains(8%) were isolated from clinical specimens and predominantly isolated pathogens were Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterococci in order.
2. During recent 5 years, the use of broad spectrum antimicrobials, quinolones, third generation cephalosporins and ¥â-lactamase resistant antimicrobials increased.
3. Staphylococcus aureus was generally resistant to penicillin and ampicillin, and MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) have been progressively increased.
4. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was generally resistant to multi drugs except amikacin and ciproflowacin.
5. Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae were less resistant to amikacin than the 3rd generation cephalosporin.
6. Enterococci, one of multi-drug resistant microorganism, showed that about 1/3 was penicillin resistant and about 1/4 was ampicillin-resistant.
